OMER’s Award
Problem 2: Mech-Animal Sidekick, Div I – Delaware Valley Elementary School
We all face challenges in life, and what matters is how you face them. This team was collaborative, supportive, encouraging, and thought beautifully on your feet when their Mech-Animal malfunctioned. The judges admired their perseverance, teamwork, and problem solving. Together, the team members all started over, reset the trick, and when the attempt failed again, they tried a different method. Each member of the team stood behind the other. It was a true demonstration of teamwork.
Each time, the trick was explained and attempted, and team members adjusted and reset. None of them gave up. None of them got upset, angry, or walked away. Together, the team members were all invested in completing the requirement right up until time ran out. The team’s set was created with a reflection of their dedication and passion for the problem they accepted. Every detail from the tiniest sparkle of candy to their characters and script reflected their hard work.
This team’s performance, style, and the manner in which the team handled the situation under pressure impressed all of the judges.
Ranatra Fusca Awards
Problem 1: The OM-Mazing Race, Div I – Dormont Elementary
This team used several impressive and effective mechanical levers on their vehicle. Their propulsion was a driver-operated locomotive-style lever mechanism that successfully rotated the rear wheel in forward or reverse. In addition, another collapsible lever mechanism with a magnet tip was used to remove obstacles form the vehicle track. Lastly, a final mechanism was used to extend from the vehicle and flip a large salt shaker to simulate melting ice and remove ice from the track using magnets.
Together, these mechanisms were designed and successfully incorporated into the presentation and worthy of a Ranatra Fusca Award.
Problem 4: Save Me Structure, Div II – Montgomery Elementary
This team was nominated for their creative engineering in the hands-on spontaneous problem “Keep Holding On.”
The team showed exceptional creativity in their use of the materials for their spontaneous problem solution. No other team developed a similar strategy. They supported the heaviest objects by their creative solution. The solution allowed them to display on understanding of balance and engineering.
